Groundhogs

Groundhogs are a very familiar sight in The Critter Guy's service area, often seen along roadways in grassy areas. These animals are also known as woodchucks, and sometimes "whistlepigs" because of a seldom-heard whistle they emit as an alarm. Groundhogs have an incredible prowess at digging holes. This is the worst thing about them, as their large ugly burrows can damage building foundations. And if that's not bad enough, their unused tunnels often end up as homes for other pests, notably skunks. We also offer skunk removal and exclusion if you need it. Being a rodent, they often cause damage by gnawing on random things. They are very good climbers, but seldom seen off the ground. Groundhogs are also strict vegetarians, which means they can easily put a significant dent in your gardening endeavors if you aren't careful.

Groundhogs aren't a trivial matter to deal with. There are a couple of common, ad-hoc, do-it-yourself remedies that many homeowners will try to use to deter groundhogs. We see evidence of them all the time when we do groundhog removals and exclusions, which is to say that they don't work that well, or else we wouldn't be there in the first place. Some homeowners attempt to fill their holes with concrete in an attempt to block the groundhogs out. This doesn't really work because groundhogs can simply dig a new one right next to it, over and over again. Other homeowners will drop various chemical products in groundhog holes, reasoning that the chemicals will render the hole uninhabitable. There is no known chemical deterrent that works to keep them away.

Our Method

The Critter Guy uses high-quality, industry-standard traps to capture and remove groundhogs. These traps are designed specifically for groundhogs, and we carefully set them up where they can be maximally effective, with professional-grade, species-specific lures. When groundhogs are caught, they can be quite aggressive, snapping at approaching hands with their large incisors, but they can't make a scratch on the heavy-duty traps that we use.

Keeping Groundhogs Out

Hiring The Critter Guy to catch groundhogs and get rid of them is nice, but there are a lot of other groundhogs out there who want somewhere to live, and they'll still have your buildings high up on the list. We can install professional exclusion fencing to permanently keep groundhogs out from under your structures. You can get a free quote from us for installing the barrier once we trap the groundhogs currently living under your property. In certain situations, we can even install the barrier without doing any trapping. If you have groundhogs digging under your stuff and want to stop them, you should talk to The Critter Guy. We'll be happy to answer your questions and deal with your groundhogs.

Certain groundhog exclusions can require large installations. We typically paint over the wire to make it blend in more. If you want, we can also install lattice on top to make it look even better. In any case, the groundhogs will certainly notice.
